Signs Your Pet Needs a Wellness Exam
You know your pet's daily habits better than anyone. A change that seems small at home can be useful information during an examination, and you do not need to wait for an obvious illness to ask for help.
A healthy appearance is still a reason to check in
Routine examinations help establish what is normal for your pet and detect changes you may not see. Most pets should have preventive visits at least annually; older pets and those with ongoing conditions may need more frequent care. Ask your veterinarian which schedule fits your pet.
Changes worth a call
- Eating less, unexplained weight changes, or drinking and urinating more.
- Reduced energy, hiding, or a change in usual behavior.
- Stiffness, limping, or difficulty getting comfortable.
- Bad breath, itchy skin, or repeated vomiting or diarrhea.
New symptoms may need a sick visit rather than a routine wellness appointment. Call and describe what has changed so the team can help determine the urgency.
Bring the details that help
Write down when changes began and bring a current medication and food list. During the visit, your veterinarian can examine your pet and recommend any screening tests based on age, history, and lifestyle.
Breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, or suspected poisoning should not wait for a wellness appointment. Contact an emergency veterinary service immediately.
