Practical care for the pets you love

Plan a Safer Road Trip with Your Pet

Before packing your pet's favorite toy, think through the journey from their point of view. Familiar equipment and a realistic schedule can make travel more comfortable.

Prepare before departure

Practice short rides and introduce the carrier or restraint before a long trip. Ask your veterinarian about any travel concerns, and check your destination's current health-document requirements early. Confirm that your lodging accepts pets.

Keep everyone secure

Use a properly secured carrier or suitable pet restraint so your pet cannot roam around the vehicle. Schedule breaks for water, bathroom needs, and movement. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even during mild weather.

Pack for the usual routine

Bring familiar food, water, bowls, prescribed medication, a leash, waste bags, and comfortable bedding. Keep veterinary records available and identify veterinary help along your route.

If travel would be too stressful or your pet's health makes it difficult, discuss alternatives with your veterinarian. A trusted caregiver at home may be a better fit for some pets.
