Practical care for the pets you love

How to Safely Change Your Cat's Food

Changing food takes patience. Cats notice differences in smell and texture, so allow time for a comfortable adjustment.

Start with a small amount

Unless your veterinarian gives different instructions, replace a small portion of the familiar food with the new food. Increase it gradually as your cat accepts it, and track how much your cat eats.

Let your cat set the pace

Cats may need several weeks, particularly when changing textures. AAHA notes that some cats may need up to 40 days. If your cat refuses the mixture or develops digestive upset, ask your veterinary team how to proceed.

Protect the appetite

Do not withhold all familiar food to force acceptance. Cats need adequate calories each day. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat stops eating or seems unwell. For a medically necessary diet, ask for a specific schedule and a plan if the food is refused.
