A Pet-Safe Halloween at Home
Doorbells, visitors, and unfamiliar costumes can change a quiet evening for your pet. Plan their space before the Halloween activity begins.
Give your pet a quiet place
Set up a comfortable room away from the front door with familiar toys and bedding. Keep identification current, and watch for escapes when guests arrive.
Keep treats and decorations out of reach
Store candy where pets cannot reach it, including treats tucked into children's bags. Chocolate and xylitol-containing candy can be dangerous. Keep candles, electrical cords, and small costume accessories away from curious pets.
Let comfort decide the costume
Skip a costume if your pet dislikes wearing it. If they are comfortable dressing up, check that they can see, breathe, and move freely. Remove outfits with loose pieces or anything your pet could chew off.
Call your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 immediately. A consultation fee may apply. Our poisoning guide explains what information to have ready.
